Becoming
American
a film by
Andres Nicolini
(16mm film - Color - 15min.)

|
Alone,
a newly arrived immigrant comes to New York City to take his first steps
toward an uncertain future, and unexpectedly embarks on a journey to self-discovery.
Becoming American is about having faith, being yourself, and beginning
a new life. Once a man has been born in a country there are nets thrown
at him to restrain him from flying. Nationality, language, religion among
others bind him. As one immigrates to a new country is as one is born
again.

"Becoming American is a thoughtful, artful and penetrating look at the immigrant experience in the United States. What Andres has been able to do in a short fifteen minutes, through a film that is at once insightful, touching, visceral, ironic and well-crafted, is give the viewer an intimate and lasting sense of the hopes, goals, and sacrifices that immigrants must face in order to become American citizens. But, never missing, is the human dimension of the story: the fear, uncertainty, risk, exposure and, ultimately, victory of the new immigrant. Through careful casting and story development, Andres has been able to universalize the immigrant experience of one person and make it the universal experience of all immigrants to America-past, present and future. As
I examined the evocative film techniques used, the rapid and precise advancement
of story, and the subtle imagery in the film (the immigrant checks his
appearance in a mirror prior to his arranged marriage, only to see a reflection
of the Statue Of Liberty), I realized that what I was witnessing was the
product of a truly talented, dedicated and promising filmmaker." |

"It
evoked a sense of being lost in a place where you want to be found."
